Overflow Incontinence is Not a Normal Condition

Bladder control women
An individual suffering from a condition where he/she is unable to control the urge to urinate is said to be suffering from urinary incontinence or leaky bladder. There are four types of urinary incontinence which is common among elderly people. This condition is more common among women than in men. People often think that leaky bladder is normal with age or they are too embarrassed to share their problem with their physician, hence, a large number of people go without receiving any proper treatment regarding the leaky bladder condition. If people did come forward and address this condition, then they would be able to cure themselves from it or be significantly relieved.

Overflow incontinence is one of the several types of urinary incontinence. This condition is characterized by the release of urine involuntarily from a urinary bladder which is overly full, usually in the absence of any want to urinate. This type of incontinence happens in those people whose urinary bladder is blocked due to reasons like prostate cancer or the urethra being narrow, or when the muscles in the bladder which helps to expel the urine is too weak. Incontinence can also be an effect of certain medicines that people take when they become aged. This type of incontinence is more common in men than in women and its potential causes are:

• An enlarged prostate.

• The urethra gets blocked due to formation of urinary stones, tumors or infections causing swelling.
• The bladder is affected if nerves get injured.

• Bladder muscles becoming weak and are not able to squeeze the urine out of the bladder.

• Diseases like Parkinson’s, diabetes, alcoholism causes nerve damage which causes incontinence.

• Antidepressants and other medicines affect the nerves that send message to the bladder.

The treatment for a person suffering from overflow incontinence is the administration of medicines, or surgery, or if that doesn’t work, then the use of catheters. Catheters can be used on a temporary basis or on a permanent basis. But a person using catheter constantly, should be beware of urinary tract infection.
